Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on the relationship between the body’s structure, mainly the spine, and its functioning. People seek chiropractic care primarily for pain conditions such as back pain, neck pain, and headache. Miami chiropractors may use a variety of treatment approaches but they primarily perform adjustments, also called manipulations, to the backbone or other parts of the body. The goal of this procedure is to correct alignment issues, relieve pain, improve function, and to support the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

Research about chiropractic care has focused on the efficacy of spinal modification for lower back pain.

The term “chiropractic” combines the Greek words cheir (hand) & praxis (practice) which describes a treatment done by hand. Hands-on therapy, especially the alteration of the spine, is central to chiropractic care. Chiropractic is based on the theory that the relationship between the body’s structure, primarily that of the backbone, and its function affects overall health.

On your preliminary visit to a Miami chiropractor, you will be asked about your health history and a physical examination may be performed, with a special emphasis on the backbone. Other examinations or tests such as x-rays may also be done. If chiropractic treatment is thought about appropriate, a treatment plan will be created.

Spinal adjustment or manipulation is the core treatment in chiropractic care, but it is not synonymous with chiropractic. Chiropractors often use other forms of treatment in addition to spinal modification. Spinal adjustment involves using the hands or a device to apply a sudden, controlled force to a joint. The aim of this procedure is to increase the range and quality of motion in the area being treated as well as to aid in restoring health. Joint mobilization is another type of manual therapy that may be used.

Researchers have studied spinal modification for a few conditions ranging from back, neck, and shoulder pain to asthma, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, and headaches. Much of the research has focused on lower back pain and has shown that spinal modification appears to be effective for some people with this condition. A recent review of scientific facts on manual therapies for a variety of conditions concluded that spinal manipulation or mobilization may be helpful for several conditions in addition to back pain, including migraine & neck-related headaches, neck pain, upper and lower-extremity joint conditions, as well as whiplash-associated disorders.

People who experience neck pain often turn to chiropractic care for help. Some swear by Miami chiropractors, saying the work they do not only relieves pain, but also addresses the source of their aches, twinges, and throbs. There are over 60,000 licensed chiropractors in the United States today. According to a recent survey, around eight percent of American adults and three percent of kids have undergone chiropractic care to treat their pain. That is a higher percentage compared to those who use other alternative therapies like yoga, massage, and acupuncture.

Chiropractors primarily use their hands to treat muscle, joint, and nerve pain by adjusting the backbone and joints. Adjustments involve the chiropractor applying a sudden, controlled force to a joint, thus pushing the joint beyond the range in which it normally moves. This is done to loosen up joints that move poorly or painfully due to tissue damage or scarring caused by either trauma or repetitive stress. An example of trauma causing neck pain is whiplash, while a repetitive stress injury could be from consistently poor posture.

For neck pain in particular, chiropractic neck adjustments, also called cervical modification, loosen up joints of the cervical vertebrae in the neck. This can reduce pain caused by pinched nerves and muscle spasms. Miami chiropractors use their hands to twist the neck sharply and snap the vertebrae back in to alignment.

Chiropractors just like typical doctors, are trained to diagnose patients through physical exams as well diagnostic tests. This includes taking a careful look at the patient’s medical history as well as performing tests such as x-rays, scans, and blood tests. After carefully studying the patient’s condition, a treatment plan can then be created. Miami neck pain treatment may include neck exercises which you can do by yourself as well as suggestions for a healthier lifestyle. Chiropractors do not prescribe neck pain medication as part of their treatment.

Chiropractic treatment for back pain is used to treat musculoskeletal conditions, such as problems with the muscles, joints, bones, and connective tissue. Studies about this type of treatment have been of uneven quality and provide insufficient findings to permit firm conclusions. However, the basic idea is that chiropractic back pain treatment and conventional medical treatments are equally helpful, at least when it comes to treating lower back pain.

Chiropractic care focuses on the relationship between the body’s structure, primarily the backbone, and function. Doctors of chiropractic, also called chiropractors or chiropractic physicians, use a kind of hands-on therapy called modification or alteration as their primary clinical procedure.

This is an alternative medical therapy and takes a different approach from conventional medicine.

The basic ideas behind chiropractic care are as follows:

The body has a powerful self-healing ability

The body’s structure (primarily that of the backbone) and its function are closely related, and this relationship affects health

The goal of chiropractic therapy is to normalize the relationship between structure and function, and helping the body as it heals.

When visiting a Miami chiropractor, on your preliminary consultation, the chiropractor will take your medical history, perform a physical examination with special emphasis on the backbone, as well as perform other examinations or tests, such as x-rays and blood tests. Your chiropractor will then create a treatment plan in the event you are found to be an appropriate candidate for chiropractic therapy.

During treatment, your chiropractor may perform one or more adjustments. An alteration, also called a modification treatment, is a manual therapy, or hands-on therapy. Chiropractic adjustments involve applying a quick, controlled force to a joint. The adjustments are applied chiefly to the backbone and they are done to increase the range and quality of motion in the area being treated.

Most chiropractors use other treatments in addition to alteration, such as mobilization, massage, and non-manual treatments.

Examples of non-manual chiropractic treatments include:

Heat and ice

Ultrasound

Electrical stimulation

Rehabilitative exercise

Magnetic therapy

Counseling about diet, weight loss, and other lifestyle factors

Dietary supplements

Homeopathy

Acupuncture
